A Dog Called Dad

  • have a coyote howling contest
  • make up a title for the Hollywood movie
  • if your dad was a dog, make a list of things to play with him
  • what would you do if your dad had fleas?
  • the artist lives in Arizona in the Sonoran Desert. Look at the illustrations for ideas about that landscape. Then draw a cactus, mountains, the sky and other things you might see in the desert, using different colors of construction paper for each object. Cut out the scenery and paste to a blue or black piece of paper. Use tints and shadows if you want.
  • read the author's definition of a coyote at the front of the book. Draw some other desert animals and include a made-up definition with your picture.
  • write a story about one of your parent's being stolen by some animal that is found near where you live
  • describe some of the problems that dad had when he returned home
  • do research on coyotes: their food, home, appearance, habits
  • be a reporter and tell the story of someone who disappears and then returns
