Classroom Activities
A Dog Called Dad
- have a coyote howling contest
- make up a title for the Hollywood movie
- if your dad was a dog, make a list of things to play with him
- what would you do if your dad had fleas?
- the artist lives in Arizona in the Sonoran Desert. Look at the illustrations for ideas about that landscape. Then draw a cactus, mountains, the sky and other things you might see in the desert, using different colors of construction paper for each object. Cut out the scenery and paste to a blue or black piece of paper. Use tints and shadows if you want.
- read the author's definition of a coyote at the front of the book. Draw some other desert animals and include a made-up definition with your picture.
- write a story about one of your parent's being stolen by some animal that is found near where you live
- describe some of the problems that dad had when he returned home
- do research on coyotes: their food, home, appearance, habits
- be a reporter and tell the story of someone who disappears and then returns
